Famous Domes in the World

A dome is a hemi-spherical structure, which usually forms a roof or ceiling. These spherical structures are built using various materials; for example, near east huge domes was constructed using solid mounds, while igloos in the Arctic were created using blocks of snow. In this post we have mentioned some of the most famous domes in the world.

St. Paul’s Cathedral

St. Paul’s Cathedral was constructed in the 17th century, and is one of most popular sites in London. The structure was bombed during World War II and was saved by firefighters. The cathedral has an impressive dome, which is inspired by the famous St Peter’s Basilica located in Rome.

United States Capitol

The United States Capitol is located on Capitol Hill in Washington DC, and is the meeting place for United States Congress. The cast iron dome is the second dome for the building. The building was expanded in 1850s and new dome was added.

Great Stupa at Sanchi

The Great Stupa is one of the oldest stone structures in India. It was constructed by emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century BC. The stupa has a simple brick dome, and is supposedly constructed over the remains of Lord Buddha.

Lotfollah Mosque

Also known as Sheikh Lotf Allah Mosque, Lotfollah Mosque was constructed in early 16th century. It is located in Iran, and is a masterpiece of Persian architecture. During early days, the Lotfollah Mosque was referred as the Domed Mosque.

Eden Project

Eden Project is the largest greenhouse in the world and is located in Cornwall. The project was completed in two and half years and was opened to the public in the year 2001. The structure is dominated by two massive enclosures that consist of adjoining domes; the initial dome has a tropical environment, while the other dome has a Mediterranean environment.

Santa Maria del Fiore

The construction of Santa Maria del Fiore was started in 1296. It is a Gothic style beautiful cathedral. It is one of the largest churches in Italy, and is located in Florence. Once completed, its dome was the largest dome in the world, even today it is known as largest brick dome in the world.

St. Peter’s Basilica

St. Peter Basilica is located in Rome. The construction of this beautiful cathedral was started in 1506 and was completed by 1615. In the year 1547 Michelangelo has redesigned the dome. The height of the dome is 136.57 meters (448.1 ft) and it is one of the tallest domes in the world.

Dome of the Rock

The construction of the Dome of the Rock was completed in 691 AD. It is located on the Temple Mount and is regarded as one of the most important religious sites in the world. Dome of the Rock is believed to be a mosque; however it is a shrine that is protected beneath the high ceiling.
