We have been using architecture to connect the differences between two physical obstacles, thus providing an easy passage. Bridges are not just architectural landmarks, but are vital parts of the infrastructures in the world. Some bridges have even become icons for the city. In this post we will discuss most famous bridges in the world.

Chapel Bridge

This bridge is a 204 m long bridge and crosses the Reuss River. It is constructed in the Lucerne City in Switzerland and is one of the oldest wooden covered bridges in Europe. It is one of the main tourist attractions in Switzerland. It was constructed in 1333, and was designed to protect the city from external attacks.

Great Belt Bridge

Actually, the Great Belt Bridge is two different bridges – a Western section and an Eastern section. They are divided by the small island of Sprogo. The West Bridge is a 6,611 meter long and is a combined bridge for railways and roadways between Sprogø and Funen. While, the East Bridge is a 1,624 meter long suspension bridge that connects Sprogø with the island of Zealand. It is constructed 254 meter above the sea level.

Chengyang Bridge

Chengyang Bridge is also known as Wind and Rain Bridge. It was constructed in 1916, and is one of the famous wind and rain bridges in China. It is constructed across the Linxi River and is heavily used. It is 64.4 meters long, 10.6 meters high and 3.4 meters wide. Chengyang Bridge is constructed of stone and wood.

Brooklyn Bridge

Brooklyn Bridge was constructed in the year 1883. It connects Manhattan city and Brooklyn and spans over the East River. When opened, it was the longest suspension bridge in the world for many years.  Brooklyn Bridge is one of the important iconic landmarks of New York. It has a wide pedestrian walkway that is reserved especially for the walkers and cyclists.

Golden Gate Bridge

This suspension bridge spans over the Golden Gate, and connects San Francisco with Marin County. It is designed by a world renowned architect Joseph B. Strauss, and was constructed in seven years. It was completed in the year 1937. When opened, it was the longest suspension bridge in the world for many years.  It is one of the important iconic landmarks of San Francisco and California.

Sydney Harbour Bridge

Sydney Harbour Bridge is one of most photographed and renowned landmarks in Australia. It is the largest steel arch bridge in the world and stands 134 meters above Sydney Harbour. The bridge was completed in eight years and was opened in March 1932.

Charles Bridge

The Charles Bridge is one of the most famous stone Gothic bridges. It is constructed over the Vltava River in Prague. The construction of the bridge was started in the year 1357 under the regime of King Charles IV, and was completed at the start of 15th century. The Charles Bridge was the only connection between the area around Prague Castle and the Old Town. Today Charles Bridge is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Prague.
